NAnOtEchNoLogY A NANO WOnDeR!
The next really big small thing...
“There’ plenty of room at the bottom” by Richard Feyman, a noble laureate and professor of physics. This talk is about one of the most outstanding technologies, that has been since the medieval period, but came into light in 20th century; the so-called “NANOTECHNOLOGY.” This technology is the confluence of many sciences like physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, and engineering, creating the devices at nanoscale, which are much smaller than a single strand of human hair (approximately 80,000nm in size). Nano is one-billionth part of a meter. Such a small scale plays a big role from medical use to the hi-fi infrastructures.

How about a cancer patient being treated in the outpatient ward and returned back home safely in a matter of few minutes? Yes! That’s going to be true! Soon! From flu to life threatening infections like AIDS and Cancer just you would need a spoon of fluid containing Nanobots (Smallest possible robotic army to be injected into our body to fight against infections) and you will be fine with in minutes. One very simple nano robot that was designed years ago was “Resiprocyte” (measures 1micron and can pump 9 billion oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules. There will be a time soon when surgeons need not stay back in operation theatre for long hours operating; they just need to inject the required quantity of Nanobots fluid. The patient neither would need anesthesia nor would be scared of surgery with external injuries. Research is being done on a flexible nanofibre membrane mesh that can be applied to heart tissue in open-heart surgery. The mesh is infused with antibiotics, painkillers and medicines in small quantities, and then applied directly to the heart’s tissues. Nanostructures used for drug encapsulation have the ability to enter cells that typically internalize materials below 100nm, with improved solubility. These nanobots play an important role as they catch each disabled cell and perform surgery and set right the patient with in seconds.
Heard about Nano PC? It is a pocket PC .designed with few 1000 atoms that can store more than a hundred billion bytes, in a volume the size of a sugar cube RAM. The new approach centers on semiconductor-based nanoparticles known as QUANTUM DOTS, which can fluoresce in different colors, respond to magnetic fields and interact wirelessly with the outside world. Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting laser (VCSEL), is one of the most advanced and smallest semiconductor laser used in high image processing, biological & chemical detection of molecules of interest in astrobiology and other space applications. Fri 24 Nov 2000 the first microscopic “helicopters” have been built by the scientists of Cornell University, which are not bigger than a virus to carry out medical tasks inside our body. Samsung electronics and Motorola are using nanotubes (MICROSCOPIC STRUCTURES STRONGER THAN DIAMOND) in flat panel screens. New nano optical switches would convert data packets from one wavelength to another in nanoseconds with miniscule lasers that are only 8 nanometer wide. This will be likely to form the beginning of an all-optical telecom network backbone.
These and all are just for the need, coming to the luxurious life one need not paint their houses every time it gets dusty, you just need to flash a laser light on the walls and that’s it the molecules in the paint get set absorb different wavelengths of light thus giving new colors and this paint uses clay particles in different ways for coatings. That is nice to hear about a cloth that can be darker and warm in winter season and change its color and property (lighter and cool) in the summer season. However, importance of nanotechnology claims of likely improving environmental benefits for entire lifecycle of a material or product, from its manufacture, its use to its eventual disposal.
Computer hard drives, car parts and catalytic converters, scratch and wear –resistant paints and coatings, sunscreens and lipsticks, long lasting tennis balls, hardwearing yet light tennis racquets, metal cutting tools, antibacterial bandages incorporating silver nanoparticles, anti-static packaging for sensitive electronic equipment, nanofilm-coated”self-cleaning” windows and stain-resistant fabrics are several uses of nanotechnology.
Link between brain and machine: The communication among people and between people and machines or tools has not been fully realizes because of the indirect interactions. The external tools need to be manipulated as an independent extension of one’s body in order to achieve the desired goal. If machines and devices could be incorporated into the “neural space” as an extension of one’s muscles or senses, they could lead to unprecedented augmentation in human sensory, motor, cognitive, and communication performance. A major goal is to measure and simulate processes from the neuron level and then to develop interfaces to interact with neural system. Another goal is to establish direct links between neuronal tissue and machines that would allow direct control of mechanical, electronic, and even virtual objects as if they were extensions of human bodies.
In addition, the last but not the least is smart weapons (big) - we have the “SMART BOMB” but not the “SMART BULLET.” In future, even weapons as small as bullet could pack more computer power to perform real time image analysis of their surroundings and communicate with weapons to acquire and navigate to targets with greater precision and control. Nano Science & Technology is finally moving from the lab to hit the market place, which is going to change the face of Industry and our FUTURE forever!
